Post Once, Syndicate Everywhere (POSSE)

POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties, with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content if they so desire.

  • people can read stuff wherever you post them, but can go to your site if they want to
  • you have full control over what, how and when you publish
  • it reduces your dependency on third parties and how they run their sites
  • you own it, and the canonical URL is on a site that you own
  • increases search visibility outside of social media
  • evidence for takedowns involving spammers / copyright thieves of its original posting
  • if you sign up and leave various social media or other third party sites, you won’t lose your data

If you want to really go over the top, you can add to the bottom of the article links to where all of this information is published and syndicated out.

This is an entry in the Commonplace Book of Sparkwood and 21. A commonplace book is a personal compilation of knowledge, ideas, quotations, and observations collected by an individual. Feel free to link and reference any entries you find useful.
